DIY Bathroom Tile Installation
Mosaic tiles are 2″ x 2″ or smaller and may come individually or pre-mounted on mesh sheets This Home Depot video shows how to install 12″ x 12″ mosaic sheets on a bathroom floor:
Here are the general steps in tiling a bathroom:
1. Make sure the floor is smooth, level and clean.
2. Snap layout lines to divide the floor into quadrants and sections, or alternatively, you can lay out the tile without layout lines in a small bathroom, testing for colors and patterns.
3. Use a mortar color that matches the grout. Apply mortar and comb it into straight vertical ridges and set down the sheets, pressing with a beater block. The mortar should cover the bottom of the entire sheet; if it doesn’t, re-comb the mortar and reapply the sheet. Check the alignment and level of the sheets as you go and move from one section to another. Use a damp sponge to wipe off any mortar from the tiles. Let the mortar dry completely
4. Use a margin trowel, mix and apply grouting. Skim the excess off with the edge of the float. The grout will set up in about 5-15 minutes. Using a damp sponge, wipe tiles diagonally to clean. Remove any haze on the tiles with a damp rage followed by a dry rag.
5. Cure the grout and let it set thoroughly.
6. Apply sealer with a sponge. Sealing provides greater water and mildew resistance.
