Design Principles of Art Placement
What types of art should you hang in your home, and where should you display it? Learn the design principles of art placement in this video by Robeson Design:
As a basic principle, a tall vertical space requires tall art, and a horizontal space requires horizontal art. This video shows several different art arrangements in different sized wall spaces.
1. Four equally sized art pieces fit nicely into a square space. They make a simple statement and fit into any decor.
2. Just because you have a horizontal space doesn’t mean you have to have horizontal art. This long horizonatl space in a laundry room has a linear arrangement of three rectangular pieces of art.
3. A long original painting fills the horizontal space above the sofa in the living room. Tip: If you have a limited budget, you can still get a great look by decorating with store-bought art in less visible/usedspaces like the laundry room and incorporating original art in more visible/used living spaces.
4. Above the fireplace, a painting sits on the mantel and leans against the wall. Tip: Mix hanging pieces and leaning pieces to vary the look.
5. Two black-and-white photos decorate the entryway. Tip: When it comes to artwork or photos in a given space, don’t mix black-and-white with color. Choose one or the other and stick with it.
6. In a situation of extreme height such as in a stairwell, consider a long fabric hanging. It is less expensive then a similar sized painting.
