Deck Renovation Tips – Installing New Deck Posts
If your deck is in need of an update, it doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole thing. Get tips on deck renovation and learn how to install deck posts in this Lowe’s video:
First, get underneath the deck and make sure the framework is in good condition and structurally sound. If it’s just your decking that’s cracked and splintered, you can just replace the deck boards with new ones. You can choose either standard treated lumber or premium treated lumber with water repellent. If the deck boards are in pretty good shape, you can refresh them simply by power washing and staining.
To further improve the look of your deck, you can update the railings and lattice by adding decorative components such as new lattice, balusters and post caps. They are not difficult to install, and you can find styles that will fit the look of your home.
Composite components are durable, easy to maintain, and are an investment toward keeping your deck looking great.
Remember to follow any manufacturer’s instructions included with the deck materials. You may also need a permit to perform any deck updates, so be sure to follow local building codes or homeowners association guidelines.
For this featured project, new composite railings were installed. While the old posts were mounted on the outside, the new posts were mounted on the inside between the rim joist and end joist. Here are the basic steps:
1. Mark the location of the existing posts so you know where to put the new ones.
2. Take down the old railings and lattice, being careful not to damage the framework.
3. Cut holes for the posts in the deck boards: Mark the thickness of the joist and the dimensions of the post onto the decking in the locations marked earlier. Make the openings somewhat larger so the posts will slide through them more easily. Make starter hole with a drill and use a jigsaw to cut the rest.
4. Attach the joint mount post brackets: Mark the backside of the joist with a square. Hold the bracket on the marks tight against the bottom of the decking and mark the bolt holes. For the corners, remove the side brackets. Drill the holes. Attach the bracket with carriage bolts but don’t tighten all the way.
5. Install the posts: Cut the posts to height, accounting for the depth of the post that goes below the deck surface. Set the post in the bracket, making sure it’s plumb, and tighten the carriage bolts. Continue attaching the rest of the posts around the deck, making sure they’re still plumb as you go.
5. After the posts are set, slide the base molding down to the bottom for a finished look.
