Creating a Hardscape For Your Home
Hardscaping, which refers to walkways, steps or retaining walls, is made from concrete, stone or brick and can be a high-priced component of your overall landscaping. It is a good idea to consult a landscape designer or architect to help you plan your hardscape to ensure that all of your needs and wants are included in the design. You will pay more up front but save money in the long run by reducing the risk of making costly errors.

Here are some ideas for hardscape projects:
- Concrete, commonly used for walkways, can be colored or stained. Avoid painted concrete as it will flake and require repainting. Alternatively, you can reuse old pieces or broken concrete slabs for patios or stepping stones.
- Natural stone is becoming more popular and can be used for pathways of various widths. You can arrange the stone contiguously or separate individual stones with lawn or mulch.
- Use paver brick two- or three-color combinations to highlight your landscaping and overall home appearance.
- Build a retaining wall if you have a sloped landscape with erosion and drainage problems. This type of project requires a qualified general contractor. In lieu of concrete, consider a green alternative like recycled resin.
