Creating a Functional Home Office
Many people currently work from home, either for their employer or for themselves. Your home office should be attractive and functional and reflect your interests and personality. You may want to decorate your office in a manner to blend in with your home, or you may want an entirely different look. Here are several ideas to help you create a productive, inviting and fun space.
- Choose colors for your office accessories (e.g. tape dispenser, stapler, binders) to match the wall color and artwork in the room.
- Add a blackboard, corkboard or whiteboard to post calendars, motivation messages and reminders.
- Paint the walls with a color that appeals to you and enhances the space. Add a decorative screen, curtains or fabric for an attractive backdrop.
- Add a colorful area rug if you work in a room lacking in architectural character or in a basement.
- If you have space, add seating for meetings and visitors.
- Designate a comfortable spot for pets that won’t interfere with movement in the room.
- Have a basket or container with paper, crayons and games for your children to keep them busy while you are working.
- If possible, place your desk in front of a window. Consider adding anti-glare fixtures for computer work, multiple task lights and ambient lights.
- Paint your file cabinets in a color that blends in with the room. Alternatively, you can use stackable wicker or wire file baskers in place of file cabinets.
- Add bookcases, cabinets and shelving over your work area for frequently used items.
- Use dual-function furnishings (for example, an armoire that houses media equipment and stores files).
- Use green plants or flowers to add color and create ambience.
