Create a Coat Rack For Your Entryway
Adding a coat rack to your entryway is a great storage solution for the winter months. Learn how to build a rustic coat rack or urban coat rack using natural and recycled materials in this Buildipedia {Re}habitat video:
Make a rustic coat rack from tree branches and a piece of reclaimed trim by following these steps:
1. Locate fallen branches around your yard or neighborhood that are sturdy and dry.
2. Measure your entryway to determine the ideal length of your coat rack.
3. Cut the trim into two 30″ pieces and two 9 1/2″ pieces for building the exterior frame of the rack.
4. Assemble the frame by running a thin line of glue along the edge of the trim and installing screws to hold the frame together.
5. Cut the branches to a length of 8 inches. Carefully cut square ends; take into account the unique bends in each branch before making the final cut. Sand down all cut edges.
6. Once the frame is dry, decide how you would like the branches and hooks to be laid out and then start attaching them one by one. Attach each branch by spreading glue on the top and bottom of each branch, then drive a nail or two into each end to secure it in place. Repeat until the frame is filled with branches.
Create an urban coat rack from wooden hangers and a piece of scrap wood by following these steps:
1. For each hanger, cut a 90 degree angle just behind the hook.
2. Plot the layout by measuring and tracing around the cut end of each hanger.
3. Drill pilot holes for your screws in both the base and the hangers. Erase any of your marks after you’ve finished drilling the holes.
4. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the bottom of the hangers and and mount them to the base.
5. Drive the screws through the pilot holes through the board and into your hangers.
