Colonial-Style Family Room and Kitchen

Designer Sara Hillery gives a tour of her updated Colonial-style family room and kitchen. See the features in this HouzzTV video:

This Dutch Colonial home. located in Richmond, VA, was built in 1971 in a style similar to the Williamsburg Tavern and has heart pine reclaimed wood floors and paneling.

In the family room, the fireplace is modeled after a cooking fireplace, and to keep the cozy feel of the space, a conscious decision was made not to paint the pine built-ins. Instead, the room is lightened with furnishings and accessories like a seagrass rug and recessed lighting. Large facing sofas create a nook in front of the fireplace. A desk does double-duty as a bar for entertaining.

The updated kitchen has reclaimed heart pine floors and inset cabinetry with small pulls. A small island with a “captain’s cut” countertop bump-out provides extra surface space and a space for bar stools. There are lantern pendant light fixtures as well as overhead and inside and under cabinet lighting. The dining nook has an antique walnut table, ghost chairs and a bay window that looks out to the backyard. The hutch-like bar is used daily by the entire family as a coffee, water and wine station.
