A pergola is a great way to add some shade or a little bit of architectural interest to your deck or yard. But when it comes to building a pergola, it’s best to leave this type of heavy lifting to the pros. Learn more in this DIY Network video:

Any time you’re building something structural in your yard, there’s a lot to consider. A qualifed cxontractor can help you navigate the process from start to finish. This may include site planning, permitting, local code requirements and any inspections which may be required.

When building a pergola, you need to start with an extremely solid foundation. This means you’ll have to dig and set concrete footers that need to be a certain width and depth, depending on the size of the structure. Your contractor will ensure that your footers are to code and properly inspected so that the rest of the structure can be safely attached.

As for the structure itself, there can be very precise cutting and notching involved. Pergolas also require fairly expensive lumber, so mistakes can get pricey.

Finally, if your design includes some decorative cuts on the ends, this may take pretty advanced carpentry skills that are beyond the scope of your average DIY-er.
