Bermuda Shutters Provide Tropical Styling and Weather Protection
One of the most essential, and quite frankly overlooked features to the outside of the home or property is the addition of high quality shutters, especially in warmer and more tropical climates. The most commonly used, as well as practical, type of shutter in the tropics are Bermuda shutters. Also known as Bahama shutters, they do such a fantastic job offering a source of protection from the elements such as intense sunlight and vicious storms, all the while still providing a good air flow through the property. Aside from the obvious reasons, what makes these shutters so unique is their purposeful and stylish design. Bermuda shutters are considerably wider than the typical exterior shutter. Also, typical shutters are installed on the sides of the window and swing shut, whereas Bermuda shutters are installed with hinges above the window and open at the bottom. Because of this unique design and placement, they require a vertical sub-stile, which in turn provides additional structure and stability. When properly installed the shutters swing out from the bottom and are effectively locked in place with a metal arm that is designed to withstand the weight of the shutter.
While this uniquely purposeful and stylish type of shutter comes in a variety of styles, the basic structure is the same. Whether they are Timberlane, Atlantic, or even Estate Millwork handcrafted Bermuda shutters, they generally have a similar look. They’re commonly made of wood, although they can be made of metal or composites, with closed and angled louvers that can be spaced in a number of different ways.
The most common areas that one would be likely to see these types of shutters are those with tropical and warmer climates. These tropical areas include the Caribbean, Bermuda, California, as well as a variety of areas in Florida such as Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and even the Florida Keys. This has a great deal to do with the protection that Bermuda shutters provide for the elements, as well as the great air flow that they provide. However, it is also generally because of the distinct tropical look that tends to add a great accent to the detail and architecture that is consistent of most tropical properties.
