Amazing Dorm Room Makeover

Designers Joel Bray and Reiko Caron take on the challenge for making over a dull 100-square-foot dorm room into a stylish living space. See their amazing makeover in this House & Home video:

Walls, furniture and carpet were off limits, so Joel and Reiko focused on workarounds:

  • The first step was to re-arrange the furniture.
  • A layer of sheers was added behind the blackout drapes.
  • Pre-cut hardboard with a layer of foam was covered with fabric to quickly create a headboard. New bedding, linens and pillows complete the bed’s transformation.
  • A shower curtain rod and curtains were installed to cover the open closet nook.
  • Fabric was used to cover the bulletin board and give it a more stylish appearance.
  • A framed map filled in empty wall space.
  • The new lamp serves double duty, lighting both the desk and bedside.
  • Additional decor items for the desk and the open hanging shelves provide the finishing touches.

Here are some takeaway tips for your own dorm room:

  • Don’t fight the colors you’re given – work with them.
  • Layer the floors and windows to really bring them to life.
  • Find some good fabric remnants to add texture and pattern.
  • Add personality by bringing in some of your favorite items from home – and if your parents let you, maybe even an armchair!
