Affordable Bathroom Makeover For a Family of Five
A family of five had a good-sized bathroom but needed to utilize all of the little niches and expand the space on a limited budget. Sarah Hartill, Style Editor, describes the features of this affordable bathroom makeover in this House & Home video:
The vanity was expanded to an IKEA double vanity which provided two sinks as well as four large drawers with organizer systems for extra storage.
Originally the bathroom had a single mirror flanked by sconces. A second mirror was added with the sconces moved up over the mirrors. The old school sconces complement the modern lines of the mirrors and the vanity.
White subway tile was installed from the floor to the ceiling. In addition to making the room feel larger, it also provides a wet room water-tight feel that is perfect for the kids to splash away in.
The toilet was replaced with a new one with more traditional lines. It provides a nice mix with the sleek modern vanity and the mirrors.
Hexagonal tile was installed on the floor. The slightly darker grout line edges the tiles perfectly and highlights them.
IKEA custom cabinetry running virtually from floor to ceiling was installed in the niches on both sides of the bathroom. The left cabinet holds toilet paper, towels and first aid kits. The right cabinet has three pullout drawers along with fixed shelving. Plastic bins on the bottom store the kids’ bath toys.
When the subway tiles were installed, the molding was removed around the existing window, revealing that the existing window was smaller than the window opening. A larger window was installed, and the bottom panel was left clear to let in more light. The window was finished with a navy/white wide-striped Roman blind.
A custom shower curtain with brightly colored tree designs along with a water-tight Shaker panel for the side of the tub provide the finishing touches for this bathroom makeover.
The end result is a bathroom that is both sophisticated and kid-friendly.
