You will need the following materials and tools:
- One 6 foot 1″ x 6′ common board
- One pack of #10 3/4″ wood screws
- One pack of #10 2-1/2″ wood screws
- Three 1/2″ floor flanges
- Three 1/2″ x 3″ pipes
- Three 1/2″ pipe caps
- Circular saw
- Drill and 1/8″ drill bit
- Measuring tape
- Carpenter’s square
- Stud finder
- Clamps
- Pencil
- Sanding block
- Safety goggles
- Paint or stain, paint brush, latex gloves (optional)
1. Measure and mark: Using your measuring tape, measure and mark the pieces you will need. Using the 1×6 piece of common board, measure two pieces that are 24 inches long.
2. Make cuts: Use the circular saw to make the cuts.
3. Paint or stain (optional): If you’re planning to paint or stain your project, give all the pieces a good sanding and then paint or stain them before you assemble it.
4. Attach top shelf: Place one board on top of the end of the second board flush to the edge. You can use your remaining piece of scrap wood for stability. Pre-drill a hole two inches from each edge, then attach with the 2-1/2 inch wood screws.
5. Pre-drill mounting holes: Pre-drill a hole on the backboard four inches in from each side.
6. Assemble hooks: Take a pipe cap and screw it on to the end of the three-inch pipe. Screw the other end into the flooring flange. Repeat two more times.
7. Mount shelf and attach hooks:
Find the location you plan on hanging your coat rack. Using your stud finder, place it on the wall and slide it horizontally across until the light indicates the location of the stud, then mark the point with a pencil. Slide it again until you hit another stud (they’re usually placed 16 inches apart from one another). Pre-drill holes into the drywall and studs.
Attach your 2-1/2 inch wood screws into your coat rack. Drill them partially through so that only the screw tip comes out the back. Take your coat rack and line up the screws against the holes you made on the wall. Finish by driving the screws into the studs.
Use your 3/4-inch wood screws to attach the hooks you assembled to the coat rack. Attach one over each of your mounting screws so you’re hiding them, and then attach one in the center.
