How to Spray Paint Kitchen Cabinets
Visually, cabinets take up most of the space in a kitchen, so painting them can dramatically change the entire space. If your kitchen cabinets are outdated, this DIY project is easier and a lot less expensive than buying brand new ones. Learn how to spray paint kitchen cabinets in this Lowe’s video:
1. Select your new cabinet color.
2. Prep the cabinets.
- Remove the drawers, doors and hardware. Number the doors and the corresponding cabinets before removing the doors. Place the door hardware in a separate bag with the same number as the door it came off of.
- Remove any oil or grease with a general purpose degreaser.
- Fill any holes or scratches with wood putty. You don’t have to fill the hardware holes if you’re going to use the same hardware, but if you want to use new hardware with a different screw pattern, you’ll need to fill in one of those holes and drill a new one on each door.
- Use painters tape, paper, plastic and drop cloths and cover anything you don’t want to get paint or dust on.
- Sand with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe up all dust using a vacuum and a fine paintbrush.
Tip: Drill pilot holes into the door edges and screw in hooks. This will allow you to hang the doors on hangers which will make painting and drying much easier.
3. Prime and paint cabinets.
- Spray paint with bonding primer. Hold the sprayer about 12 inches away. Keep the motion and distance consistent for each pass and overlap a bit for adequate coverage. Lightly sand between coats to remove any imperfections.
- Once you’re done with the primer, flush the sprayer with clean water.
- Spray paint with your chosen paint.
4. Reinstall the cabinet doors and hardware.
