How to Paint Furniture
Refreshing old furniture pieces with a fresh coat of paint and new hardware will give them new life. Learn how to paint furniture in this video by The Home Depot:
You will need the following tools and materials for this DIY project:
- General Prep: Microfiber towels, a drop cloth, tack cloths, a screw driver, all-purpose cleaner, latex gloves
- Furniture Prep: Palm sander, safety mask, sandpaper, safety goggles, 10-quart bucket
- Prime/Paint: Mini foam roller, 2-inch paint brush, foam rollers, oil-based paint, paint tray, oil-based primer
Prep:
- Choose a project area with good ventilation and space to work. Spread a drop cloth over your work area. Place the furniture on blocks for easier access.
- Remove hardware, doors and drawers. Clean all surfaces with cleaner and tack cloths. Rinse with a damp cloth and water. Dry immediately after rinsing.
- Sand with the woodgrain using a finish palm sander with 120 grit sandpaper. Use folded sandpaper for corners and tight areas. Wipe down with a tack cloth to remove all sanding dust.
Prime:
Prime with oil-based primer using a mini foam roller. Use a 2-inch brush for hard to reach areas. Allow 2 hours drying time. Lightly sand with fine 400 grit sandpaper. Wipe clean removing dust.
Paint:
- Paint with oil-based paint using a mini foam roller. Use a 2-inch brush for hard to reach areas. Allow 6-8 hours drying time.
- Inspect the finish for any imperfections and re-sand them with 400 grit sandpaper.
- Apply a second coat of oil-based paint. Allow 6-8 hours drying time.
Wrap Up:
Reinstall your old hardware or install new hardware. Move painted furniture into place and enjoy the new look you’ve created!
