How to Make a Fun and Colorful Open Shelving Unit

1. Cut 1×8’s to the following sizes:
- 7 at 12-1/2 inches
- 4 at 36 inches
2. Plan your layout. You may want to alternate how many pieces you put between each shelf. Staggering the boards makes it easier to connect the supports to the top and bottom.
3. Measure to make sure there is equal sizing on each side.
4. Take a pencil and mark where each board is so you don’t forget where it goes.
5. Working layer by layer, use two 2-inch wood screws and wood glue to attach each board. Pre-drill first to avoid any splitting of your wood boards.
6. Once the shelving unit is assembled, use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.
7. Paint the shelving unit. This is a great time to have fun with colors and personalize the shelving unit for your kid’s space. Let dry.
8. Attach the legs.
9. Attach wall safe mounting brackets to keep the unit from falling forward.
