How to Build a Three-Tier Storage Bin

A cool storage solution is a great way to keep kids’ clutter off the ground. This stacked wood organizer is easy to build and fun to paint, and it holds a lot of stuff. Learn how to build a three-tier storage bin in this DIY Network video:

1. Cut the following pieces of wood:

  • From 1x10s, cut six 10″ x 22″ pieces and six 6-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ x 10″ pieces. Use a sliding miter saw to cut a 30-degree angle at the 6-1/2″ edges and a 25-degree angle at the 8-1/2″ edges.
  • From 1x8s, cut three 6-1/2 x 20-1/2″ pieces.
  • From 1x4s, cut three 4″ x 20-1/2″ pieces.

2. Spray-paint the wood pieces in your desired color(s) (for this project, the 10″ x 22″ pieces were painted in light pink, hot pink and purple to create an ombre effect). After letting them dry, flip them over, then paint the backs and edges white using a roller. Repeat these steps for all of your cuts. Set the pieces aside and let dry.

3. Paint the exposed edges gold, then let dry.

4. Use wood glue, wood clamps and 1-1/4″ screws to assemble the boxes.

5. Stack and attach the boxes using mending plates and screws. Add the fronts (4″ x 20-1/2″ pieces), then add the top (6-1/2″ x 20″ piece).
