For this DIY project, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Two 2″ x 2″ x 6′ select pine boards
  • One 2″ x 2″ x 8′ select pine board
  • Ten #8 2″ wood screws
  • Circular saw
  • Drill with 1/8″ drill bit
  • Measuring tape or carpenter’s square
  • Pencil
  • Sanding block
  • Clamps
  • Safety goggles
  • Safety gloves (optional)
  • Paint or stain (optional)

1. Measure and mark cuts: Using the measuring tape, measure and mark cuts on the 2″ x 2″ x 8′ pine board according to the cut list. You will end up marking five 18-inch sections. Pieces needed: Five 2″ x 2″ x 18″ boards and two 2″ x 2″ x 6′ boards.

2. Make cuts: Use the circular saw to make the marked cuts on the select pine board. Use the clamps while making the cuts. Use the sanding block to smooth any rough edges.

3. Paint or stain: Paint or stain all the cut pieces. Wait for the pieces to dry prior to assembly.

4. Drill holes for attaching rungs: Mark five holes 12 inches apart and 12 inches from each end on each of the 2″ x 2″ x 6′ select pine boards. Carefully pre-drill a hole using the 1/8-inch drill bit. Make sure the drill goes all the way through the board.

5. Drill holes into each rung: Hold each rung against the pre-drilled holes and drill through the sides into the end of the rung.

6. Attach rungs: Screw the 2″ wood screws through each side into the end of each rung.
