Terra Cotta Textured Accent Wall

The warmth and texture of terra cotta has been around for a long time, and it can give a space a very organic look. Learn how to create a terra cotta textured accent wall in this Lowe’s video:

1. Pick a shade of paint closest to terra cotta in color.

2. Stir a container of roll-on texture to the consistency of soft ice cream.

3. Start by practicing on a scrap piece of dry wall and spread the texture with different trowels, like a V-notch, square-notch or gauging trowel to determine the look you like best.

4. Once you’ve picked your trowel, apply the texture to the wall. Work in small sections, and don’t fret any mistakes (use a spray bottle to spray on water to give yourself more time for any corrections). Do any spot repaits before it sets

5. Install a frame around the edge using 1×2 trim, cutting them to size and joining them together at the edges (create hidden “scarf” joints by cutting at a 45-degree angle). Paint the trim before installation. Install the frame before the texture sets and secure using a hammer and finishing nails. Put wood glue in the scarf joints to prevent separation. Finish by countersinking the nail holes with a nail punch.

6. Use a super thick nap roller and apply the paint.

Project Tips:

  • To prevent cracking, the texture should be no more than 1/8 inch deep.
  • Trowel lightly to avoid damaging the dry wall.
  • Press on to the painting – a coat of paint will help smooth over any irregularities or small cracks.
