Modern Fireplace and TV Focal Wall Makeover

This living room gave off serious ’90’s vibes, from the grimy tile to the underwhelming mantel to all those TV cables. A new surround and mantel give this space an updated look. See the details of this modern fireplace and TV focal wall makeover in this HGTV video:

Zinc paneling and a new and improved long mantel turned what used to be a ’90’s fireplace into a fabulous focal wall.

This makeover began by removing the TV and all its components and then the mantel. A chisel and hammer were used to remove the tile.

A new mantel ledge was built from 1×4’s and birch plywood and runs wall to wall for a streamlined look. It is 6 inches deep at the mantel but 14 inches deep where the TV components are housed.

Underneath, zinc panels tie both walls together. The panels were darkened to a rich matte metal finish by applying copper sulfate. After two coats and a spray sealer, the panels were installed to the walls with construction adhesive.

A magnetic fireplace screen was made out of painted plywood and wood slices, covering up the unattractive fireplace glass.

Two large pieces of artwork over the fireplace draw the eye up and into the space and finish off this focal wall.
