How to Make a Woven Wall Hanging

Are you a weaving hobbyist? You can create a DIY wall hanging that will warm up your walls. Learn how to make a woven wall hanging in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:

1. Start weaving with medium-weight thread. Weave tail end in and out 5-6 rows on bottom left side. Leave a short tail on the back.

2. Thread needle. To begin plain weave, slide needle through to opposite side and pull yarn through. Use a fork to push close to bottom.

3. Push the dowel back up. Weave over next warp, right to left, until you reach the other side.

4. Slowly pull all the yarn through. Use fork to press first woven row. Repeat until you’ve completed 12 rows.

5. Clip yarn leaving a short tail.

6. To make fringe, wrap bulky yarn from your hand to elbow. Repeat about 40 times and cut in half.

7. To add fringe, take one strand of bulky yarn and fold in half. Use folded are to wrap from front to back over first two warp threads. Bring tail ends through to front by splitting two warp threads. Pull tight and push down toward the woven rows. Repeat for two rows.

8. For second fringe section, wrap medium-weight yarn about 180 times and cut.

9. With three strands of medium-weight yarn, repeat fringe knots starting with first two warp threads. Repeat until row is complete.

10. Complete second fringe section for three rows.

11. Repeat plain weaving for two inches with medium-weight yarn.

12. For smallest fringe area, wrap yarn around hand about 40 times and cut. Repeat fringe step for three rows.

13. Repeat plain weaving for two rows with medium-weight yarn.

14. Change to a different medium-wieght yarn color. Weave across one row, left to right, and return.

15. On third row, stop short the last warp thread and weave back. Repeat, decreasing one warp each time, to create diagonal design.

16. Repeat in reverse, adding one warp each time, with new yarn color.

17. Finish by adding a few plain weave rows. Stop weaving a few inches from the top.

18. Trim fringe to desired length and shape.

19. Remove cardboard. Remove from bottom nails.

20. Knot the strings across the bottom.

21. Weave in loose ends with a yarn needle and clip tails.

22. Thread a dowel through top to hang.
