How to Build Pallet Wood Planters
Rustic pallet wood plus a little paint equals totally adorable DIY planters. Best of all, they’re practically free! Learn how to build pallet wood planters in this HGTV video:
For this DIY project, start with a few pallets in relatively good shape. You can usually find these free on Craigslist or at your local garden supply store. You’ll also need exterior paint, paint brushes, a hammer, wood screws, nails, measuring tape, a drill, a carpenter square, circular saw, and heavy duty casters.
1. Start by disassembling your pallets using the circular saw. Remove the planks with clean cuts. This will give you even edges to work with.
2. Once everything is cut, measure and mark your planks to the height you want for your planter. Lay them side by side to determine the width. Then cut the planks to size. Repeat this step for all four sides of your box.
3. With all of the sides cut, lay everything out and mark for your braces. The braces are what will hold the planks together.
4. Cut the braces to size, then pre-drill and screw the sides together. Repeat this step for all four sides.
5. To assemble your box, butt the sides together and use screws to securely attach them. Then to make the bottom support, measure and cut the planks to the same width as the bottom of your box. Attach the planks with wood screws.
6. Now it’s time to install the casters. These are optional, but if you’re going to have a large plant in the box, it makes it a lot easier to move around.
7. Now that everything is assembled, you’re ready to add some color. Be sure to use exterior paint so this holds up outside.
8. Add your plants. Potted palm trees give the space a casual relaxed feel.
