Plan your project by starting a kitchen remodel binder with tabs for each design element. Pull pictures out of magazines or off the Internet and put them in the binder.
Countertops and Backsplashes:
The backsplash behind the range/cooktop is the focal point and sets the color tone for your kitchen. Some possibilities include shiny glass tile in a beautiful pattern, natural stone, or subway tile in a mixed satin and shiny pattern.
You can have different color countertops for the lower cabinets and the center island as well as different edge detailing. If you want the look of marble but are concerned about staining and etching, consider choosing granite with a marble appearance.
Cabinetry:
If it’s in your budget, especially if you have a smaller kitchen, think about custom cabinets that maximize storage with ample drawers, cubbies, pull-out spice racks, and lazy susans.
Take your cabinets up to the ceiling unless you have a vaulted ceiling or an unusual architectural space. It may not be practical to have cabinets sitting on the countertop, but you can create a corbel effect that provides the same look without loss of counter space.
Windows directly behind the cabinets bring in additional light.
Add bling to your cabinets with stainless steel accents.
Make an unused corner space functional with a microwave oven and storage cubbies.
Flooring:
Wood, stone and tile are hard surfaces that feel a little cold, so warm up the space and add color and style with an area rug.
Appliances:
Depending on your personal style, you may want appliances with a stainless steel finish or wood covers to make them blend in with the cabinetry and feel more like furniture.
Finishes:
Mixing and matching finishes on your fixtures and cabinet hardware will give your kitchen a more custom look.
Accessorizing:
Complementary window treatments and light fixtures provide the finishing touches.
