How to Make a Reclaimed Wood Sliding Barn Door
If you know your way around a few tools, building a barn door is an easy project. Learn how to make a reclaimed wood sliding barn door in this DIY Network video:
For this DIY project, you will need plywood, wood glue, nails, reclaimed wood, a table saw, a chop saw and a nail gun. You should also have hardware, safety goggles, wood glue, a tape measure, sanding block and a drill with a bit.
1. Cut the plywood to size.
2. Lay the reclaimed wood planks across the plywood and cut to size.
3. Arrange the planks in a way that highlight the wood’s characteristics.
4. Apply wood glue to the plywood, then place the planks in place on the plywood. Secure the planks in place with a nail gun.
5. Once both sides of the door are completed, cut the trim to 2 inches in width using a table saw. Measure to the height and width of the door and cut with the chop saw.
6. Attach the trim to the door using the wood glue and the nail gun.
7. Use the extra trim to build a custom handle. Cut the door handle and braces to size. Nail the braces to the handle, and use wood glue and the nail gun to attach to the door.
8. Hardware can cost $100-$400 depending on where you buy it. There are a lot of different styles of hardware to choose from. The key is to make sure it can support the weight of the door. Follow the package instructions for installing the hardware to the door.
9. Make sure the track is tall enough for the door and the hardware to hang without dragging. Your door is going to be heavy, so you’re going to hit the studs and make sure you choose anchors that can hold the weight of your door and hardware.
10. To prevent drilling the anchors too deep into the wall, mark the drill bit right at the end with a piece of tape so you know what distance you need to drill. Drill holes directly into the studs; this will help support the weight of the door.
11. Attach the rail to the wall with bolts and hang the door.
You now have a rustic barn door that’s built to last.
