How to Make and Install Floating Shelves
A floating shelf with no visible brackets is a great way to display your decor and create a striking accent piece. Learn how to make and install floating shelves in this Lowe’s video:
You can either use a premade shelf for easy installation or build your own.
To install a premade shelf:
- Locate studs with a stud finder
- Add screws to attach the bracket to the wall
- Slide the shelf onto the bracket and tighten set screw
To make a single shelf:
- Cut a board to length
- Drill pocket holes in the shelf top
- Attach the shelf to studs or drywall anchors
- Fill holes with plugs or wood filler, then sand
To make a shelf frame:
- Create a frame using 1×4 boards
- Mark the position of the studs on the frame
- Nail a bottom face on the frame before mounting on the wall
- Attach the fame to the studs with screws
- Add a top panel and a front face
- Paint or stain to match your decor
