Contemporary Wood Kitchen Transformation

This kitchen was consolidated into a corner and was not using the full maximum potential of the space and required an enlargement and change of axis in relation to the rest of the home. See the details of this contemporary wood kitchen transformation in this House & Home video:

The design goal was to stretch out the kitchen into the dining room and change the orientation of the kitchen to side to side.

Two design challenges included a structural column in the middle of the space and an angled wall. With the change in orientation, stripping down the column to its bare essentials and painting it black makes it almost disappear. The angled wall was finished with tall cabinetry and a long narrow window.

The ceiling treatment is a series of fins that conceal the lights, mask the different ceiling levels and anchors the L-shaped island, making it the center of the space.
