“Grown-Up” Great Room Makeover

This first-time homeowner wanted to make her home look more “grown-up”. The original ’70’s kitchen was in need of an upgrade, and the open floor plan posed a decorating challenge. With five easy DIY projects in one weekend, DIY expert Monica Mangin transforms this space from “dorm room chic” to sophisticated. See the details of this “grown-up” great room makeover in this Lowe’s video:

New laminate countertops, new matte black sink, replacement of one wall of open cabinetry with open shelving, new cabinet hardware

In the kitchen:

1. New laminate countertops give the look of granite or marble without the expense.

2. A matte black subway tile backsplash was installed from countertop to ceiling.

3. The lower cabinets were painted dark green to provide a touch of warmth.

On the walls:

4. A DIY pegboard made from plywood and dowels and stained to match the wood wall serves as an open shelving system for decor.

5. A picture ledge made from boards serves as a display space for artwork.

New furniture, accessories, and plants in the living/dining areas and a new matte black sink and new cabinet hardware in the kitchen provide the finishing touches.
