How to Install a Wood Closet Organizer

Prep: Before you install, it’s important to create a closet plan. Then you can begin your prep. Remove your old closet system and repair the walls if needed – spackle, sand and prime. This is also the perfect time to paint. When the paint’s dry, lightly mark the studs where you’ll hang the tower unit.

Base Tower: Now assemble the tower. These kits are pretty easy to put together – just follow the directions. It’s usually just a matter of locking the bolts and cams together. With organizer kits, you can either set the tower unit on the floor and cut the baseboards to fit, or you can mount it on the wall. To mount the unit on the wall, mark the mounting locations. Some kits include a template to help position mounting cleats. Drill holes into the studs you marked during the prep, then secure the cleat with lag bolts. Attach the top cleat too. Now just set the tower on the cleats.

Top Shelves: Secure brackets to the tower unit first. Then attach the other brackets on the wall at the same height. If you need to cut the shelves to length, wrap painter’s tape around the cutline to keep the wood from splintering and cut with a saw. Then just attach the shelves.

Hang Rods: Attach the open bracket to the tower, then attach the closed bracket to the wall. Cut the rod to length with a hacksaw or pipe cutter, set it in place, and lock in with the screw.

Accessories: Finish with the accessories – drawers for socks, cubbies for shoes, and extra shelves for baskets.

Corner Space: To get the most from a corner space, you can attach an adjacent shelf with wall brackets. A little extra storage goes a long way.
