How to Use a Multimeter

A multimeter is a device that can be used to measure current, voltage and resistance. Learn how to use a multimeter to help with basic electrical repairs in this Lowe’s video:

Set the multimeter to the proper voltage range and use it to confirm whether or not an outlet has power. To check an outlet, carefully insert a lead into each of the slots and then check your reading. A standard outlet should read about 120 volts.

Turn the meter to the proper DC voltage range to test batteries and anything from your car to your television remote. To test a battery, simply put the positive lead on the positive terminal and the negative lead on the negative terminal and check your reading. When checking your car battery, anything under 12.2 volts should be charged or replaced.

When diagnosing other electrical issues such as your dryer not working or a faulty light bulb, use the continuity test. This test is used to make sure electricity can freely flow through a device. Touch the lead to each of the contacts. If there is no reading, that can signify a faulty device. If there is a reading or beep, that signifies that electricity is flowing freely.

NOTE: When working with electricity, NEVER trust an outlet that shows no voltage. Always turn the breaker off before you work.
