Loft Space Makeover

This artist’s sleeping loft was small with too high of a bed, and the open stairs posed a safety risk for her young son. With five easy DIY projects in one weekend, DIY expert Monica Mangin transforms this space into a stylish personal retreat with a finished staircase. 1. Using a dremel, a pattern was created on every other step using cups and bowls, giving the stairs an Asian-inspired feel and tying in with the mural. The addition of a geometric railing provides safety as well as visual interest.

2. A horizontal railing encloses the loft space which was expanded into the adjacent storage area.

3. The bed was replaced with new low-profile platform bed with detailing on the headboard that mimics the pattern on the stairs.

4. A non-traditional photo gallery wall was created from two wooden outdoor garden trellises.

5. Privacy curtains were installed using coated wire and a carabiner.
