NYC Backyard Transformation

This NYC apartment has a small ugly backyard with mismatched fences on both sides and a lot of concrete surrounding a bare dirt patch. With five easy DIY projects in one weekend, DIY expert Monica Mangin gives this space style and functionality. See the transformation in this Lowe’s video:

The transformed backyard has dining, seating and kid-friendly zones.

1. Attaching wood lattice to the existing fences, stacking horizontal pine boards across the top and staining them dark brown helps unify the space and adds richness and warmth.

2. Concrete blocks were stacked, secured with construction adhesive and painted a light blue to create a raised bed planter.

3. The kid-friendly space has a tic-tac-toe board and game pieces made from a wood stump and small flat rocks were painted to create a tic-tac-toe board and game pieces. A chalkboard was created from water-resistant backer board by applying two coats of chalkboard paint, adding a frame, and mounting it to the fence.

4. The dirt patch was covered with artificial turf and secured with nails, creating a seating zone.

5. Greenery was added to the planter and around the fence perimeter.

An outdoor area rug, dining set, sofas and chairs provide the finishing touches.
