How to Make Concrete Block Planters

Whether you have a tiny patio or a sprawling yard, concrete block planters with brightly colored geometric designs are a perfect way to bring a little ’80’s pop into your outdoor space. Learn how to make them in this Lowe’s video:

For this DIY project, you will need concrete blocks, concrete caps, paint brush, painter’s tape, exterior primer paint in bright colors (the bolder the better), drop cloth, wire mesh and decorative pebbles. In terms of plants, pick plants with shallow roots, like succulents.

1. Wipe down the concrete blocks, removing any particles or debris.

2. Using painter’s tape, tape out your design on the concrete blocks. Feel free to experiment with different shapes and colors. You can stack the blocks to create a vertical wall of planters. Paint the concrete blocks, painting away from the tape. Concrete tends to absorb paint, so use three coats and let dry in between each one. Be sure to paint all visible areas.

3. Cut mesh lining in the same size as the bottom of the concrete blocks. Remember to wear gloves for safety. Using the cinder block caps as stencils, use a marker to outline the caps and cut. The mesh will be used to hold the plants, soil and pebbles inside the blocks.

4. Fill in the concrete blocks. Fold the mesh into a pocket shape and stick it into the concrete block, using one mesh lining per hole. Partially fill the holes with pebbles; these will hold the potting soil and ensure proper drainage..

5. install the plants and top the surrounding soil with pebbles.

6. Stack the blocks up.

7. Style your space with pops of color.
