Getting the perfect wall mount light in the perfect spot can be a project that everyone can do – and it can look great. Learn how to install wall lighting in your bathroom in this Wayfair.com video:

When you’re replacing a wall-mounted light in a bathroom, particularly a sconce, it’s realy important that it’s placed at the right height above countertop level. The “sweet spot” is between 36 and 48 inches above countertop height.

Before replacing your light fixture, it’s important to cut off the light switch to the bathroom and ensure the breaker is off in the electrical panel. Also, check with a voltage meter to ensure there is no voltage at the source of the wire. If for any reason you are uncomfortable with electricity or changing a light, definitely consult a professional.

Fixtures come in three basic components – the mounting plate, the fixture itself, and the globe which goes over the fixture and diffuses the light.

After taking down the old fixture, the hot wire, the neutral wire and copper ground wire will be exposed. Start with the ground wire. It’s the easiest to connect and allows the fixture to be held in place while you’re connecting the power leads.

1. Attach the ground wire to the green ground lug.

2. Attach the plate to the wall.

3. Attach the wires with wire nuts.

4. Turn the power on temporarily to see if the wiring is correct.

5. Attach the fixture to the wall. Don’t tighten the screws too tight.

6. Check the instructions for the correct bulb wattage.
