How to Build a Herringbone Patterned Bench

Brazilian modern style is one of Vogue’s top eight design trends. This style incorporates bold wood accents and artistic plays with light. Learn how to build a herringbone patterned bench and bring this style into your space in this Lowe’s video:

Note that while the bench is described as chevron patterned, it is actually herringbone patterned as the planks are rectangular.

For this DIY project, you will need two 2×4 planks and five 1×4 planks and one 1×20 plank. When selecting your wood, lift it up, rotate it and look down – make sure the wood is not warped. You will also need wood stain, wood screws, pre-stain conditioner, measuring tape, pencil, mallet, drill and circular saw.

Build the Base

Cut one 2×4 into 2 48″ pieces, another 2×4 into one 45″ piece and another 2×4 into two 14″ pieces. Form a box with the 48″ and 14″ pieces; the 45″ piece (“stringer”) will be positioned in the center to create a grid. Pre-drill holes and put in wood screws, securing on all four sides of the box. Install the “stringer” and tap down with a mallet. Measure for accuracy (ensure it’s centered) and adjust as needed. Pre-drill holes and put in wood screws to secure the “stringer”.

Build the Seat

Measure and mark the center of the planks. Cut 24 18″x1″ pieces from a 2×4 and line them up precisely on the bench. You are going for a perfect 45-degree angle. Start by marking the center of one plank and line it up with the center of the “stringer”, making sure they’re aligned. Add a second plank and make it flush with the first. Use a nail gun to secure the planks. Repeat this alignment with the remaining planks, following the dots down the center of the planks and using nails and wood glue to secure them. When finished, add two planks at the top to complete.

Cut Off the Edges

Use C-clamps to fasten the box down. Put on goggles and gloves and tie your hair back. Saw off the edges, leaving a one-inch lip on all sides. Use the scraps to fill in the leftover spaces; saw, nail and glue as needed.

Add the Legs

Cut a 1×20 into 2 18″ long pieces, making sure the wood grain is running vertically. Line them up with the bench, pre-drill holes and put in wood screws.

Pre-condition the Wood

Apply pre-stain conditioner and let dry.

Stain the Bench

Using a brush designed for oil-based stains, apply the stain in long thin stips and let dry. Apply a second coat and let dry.
