Mid-century modern is the design style that just keeps on going. This look is distinguished by clean lines, flat roofs, flat gardens with cacti and pops of color on the front door. You can inject this style into your space with a house number sign.
For this project, choose house numbers that are clean and modern with no ornate flourishes. You’ll also need exterior paint, 1″ x 8″ x 2′ poplar board, 1″ x 2″ x 8′ pine furring strip, and faux grass.
1. Build the box. From the poplar board, cut a 1 x 6 into one 24″ piece for the back, then cut a 1/2 x 2 into two 24″ pieces and two 4-1/2″ pieces. Assemble the box by putting the short pieces on the short sides of the back piece and the long pieces on the long sides of the back piece. Glue the bottom and corner surfaces with wood glue and fasten the pieces together. Let dry. Reinforce the box by nailing it down – use 2 nails on the short pieces and 3 nails on the long pieces.
2. Paint the box. Just paint the outside and inside of the box on all four sides. Leave the back piece unfinished as it will be glued later. Using white paint will set off the green grass that will cover the back of the box, but you can choose any color you like. Let dry.
3. Measure and cut the faux grass to fit the inside of the box. Remove any excess and fluff it.
4. Secure the grass to the box. Spread glue across the inside of the back piece and apply the grass, pressing it down.
5. Add the house numbers. Remove the numbers and the stencils from the packaging and place the stencils lined up and centered in the box. Take a nail and puncture holes where you will be drilling the holes in the stencils. Place the studs in.
6. Place the numbers onto the studs. Screw in with needle nose pliers. Take a plank of wood to cover the numbers and tap down with a mallet to secure.
7. Mount the house number box near your front entryway.
