Comparison of Seeding vs Sodding for Lawn Areas
If you’re looking at lawn areas or re-doing a lawn area because it’s been so damaged or infested with invasive weeds or pests, you’re probably debating whether to seed or sod – or both. This video by Better Homes and Gardens presents a comparison of seeding vs. sodding for lawn areas:
Sod is instant and gives you a beautiful lawn. It can be planted anytime during the growing season and is basically weed-free. You do, however, need to water continuously in the morning and at night for the first few weeks so you can have the roots established. Sod has a higher initial cost and the species selection is limited.
Seeding has a lower initial cost and a larger selection of species; however, it takes longer to get a dense lawn, and weeds can be a problem. Re-seeding may be required in the event of washouts or poor germination.
Your starting points in choosing between seed, sod or both should be the location and planned use of your outdoor spaces. For example, for a growing family or someone that wants instant space, you may want to sod your backyard.
