Begin assembling the base by building the side panels. Cut the tongue-and-groove slats to length and attach the legs. Make sure the smooth face of the boards faces out. Connect the two side panels to each other by installing the back slats. Measure the dimensions inside the base and cut and install the front and back frame rails. Now install a front divider and side frame rails.
Next, build the tray and box that will hold the plants. Center a support on the frame rails and install the slats that will support the soil. This will create an angle on the bottom of the tray for drainage. Cut the front and back sections to length and fasten to the tray supports and slats. Install the lower trim around the base of the box and the upper trim on the top.
Lastly, hide your storage area with a set of doors. Build a frame and apply the tongue-and-groove panels, making sure that all the parts are square before driving the nails. The tongue edge faces up so water doesn’t collect in the grooves. Trim the top of the tongue if it sticks above the frame. Before installing the doors, attach a 1/4-inch mesh hardware cloth to fit inside the base, then attach the hinges and doors and finally the hardware of your choice.
Insert a liner made of plastic sheeting and cut a drain on each side. Add soil, plant vegetables, herbs or flowers, and watch your garden grow.
