This project should be installed by replacing your upper cabinets. The hood surround is designed to accommodate a variety of fans; just modify the blower frame to match the manufacturer’s installation instructions. You can also customize the finish to match your decor. For a complete tools and materials list and project instructions, click here.

1. Begin by building the case that will surround the fan unit. Cut the sides and front of the base and connect them with pocket holes and screws. Cut the matching side panels at the same time for a perfect fit. Finally, attach the hanger rail in between the sides.

2. Make another box for a blower frame that will connect your blower. Refer to your specific blower directions for correct measurements. When the frame is complete, install it in the case.

3. Build the front access panel. This panel can be easily removed to access the blower and vent for maintenance. To build the access panel, cut the cleats and slats to length. Use a spacer between the slats as you connect the cleats to the slats.

4. Complete the case with your desired finish. Assemble the mounting frame and secure it to your cabinets, then slide in the whole case and attach it with screws to the mounting frame and back wall.

5. Install the fan components and duct work by following the manufacturer’s directions.

6. Finally, place the access panel on the front of the surround with the cleats fitting in the sides and the bottom resting on the front of the case. Attach the panel with countersunk screws, and you’re finished.
