Five Tips for Getting the Luxury Look for Less

Would you like your home to look more expensive without breaking the bank? This Smart Interiors video presents five tips for getting the luxury look for less:

1. A space that lacks crown molding tends to look average. For very little money, crown molding provides richness; the wider the trim, the greater the impact and more expensive the room will look.

2. Throw pillows are fabulous accessories for your couch, chairs and love seats. Pile them on! One pair is too skimpy. Use two pairs in contrasting patterns, colors and textures. Instead of 12″ x 18″ pillows, opt for larger 22″ pillow covers and stuff them with a 24″ down blend insert. Bigger pillows will have a much bigger impact.

3. Upgrade hardware finishes in bathrooms and kitchens. Builders use standard generic hardware in bulk as it is more cost-effective, but it’s not in the best interest of the homeowner who wants a more custom look. Hardware is not that expensive, and you can find more unique options at your local hardware store, specialty shop or flea market.

4. Lighting tends to be overlooked, and it is another builder-standard accessory that typically lacks character and style. Get rid of the non-descript chandeliers, pendants, bathroom bar lights and ceiling fans and replace them with a more designer look. Try scouting second-hand stores, flea markets or Craigslist.

5. Nothing says luxury like fresh flowers and plants, and they look wonderful everywhere. Faux plants are fine, but keep them current. If they are more than five years old, get rid of them as they become faded and dusted and often dated in style.
