How to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality with Houseplants

“Living a greener life” and “energy efficiency” are the buzzwords of our times, but it seems the more energy efficient we become with our homes more tightly built, our air quality starts to suffer. P. Allen Smith discusses how to improve your indoor air quality with houseplants in this video:

Non-polluting building materials, low VOC paints and air purification systems are several things that can work toward making the environment inside your home as clean as possible. If you want to take on indoor air pollution in a more natural way, you might consider a study done by NASA several years ago about how certain kinds of houseplants can be really great air filtration systems. They look good in the house, and they can be used almost anywhere.

Some of the best houseplant for air purifying are pothos, spider plants, corn plants, elephant ears, Gerbera daisies and peace lilies. If you want something a little taller, you might try a dracaena, or for something more basic, a needlepoint English ivy provides visual interest with its beautiful variegation.
