How to Measure for a Replacement Oven

Looking to replace your wall oven? Making an accurate measurement before you shop will give you a quick and trouble-free installation. Wall ovens are sold by width, but dimensions can vary by manufacturer, so how do you find the right size for your space? Learn how in this video by The Home Depot:

You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver, a tape measure and a notepad to write down measurements. You’ll need to measure both the current unit and the wall opening it occupies, which means you need to slide out the existing oven.

1. Start by shutting off the power to your wall oven by turning it off at the circuit breaker. Make a note of the amperage. If you have a gas oven, locate the valve and shut off the supply, making sure the lever is perpendicular to the gas line. Gas ovens usually have an electrical supply as well, so don’t forget to shut off the power at the circuit breaker.

2. Measure the height and width of your oven as it sits mounted in the wall and write these dimensions down. Most ovens will have a lip of one inch or more that sits outside the cutout.

3. Open the oven door and look for the screws in the frame that mount the oven to the wall cabinet. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove every screw, setting them aside. You may also need to remove trim pieces outside the oven.

4. Slowly pull the oven forward several inches and avoid pulling on the oven door. Wall ovens are heavy (most weigh over 200 pounds), so be careful not to slide the oven out more than a few inches so it doesn’t fall. Have someone help you support the oven while you measure. With the oven partially removed, you can measure the cut-out. Measure the distance from across the top and bottom of the cutout from the left and right edge. This is the actual cutout width. If there is a slight difference in the measurements, use the smaller measurement to ensure the new oven fits. Then measure the distance up and down along each side of the oven from top to bottom. This is the cutout height and should be noted along with the cutout width.

5. Once you’ve measured the cabinet cutout, push the oven firmly back into the cabinet. Be sure to re-install the screws in the frame to secure the oven to the cabinet.

6. Finally, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and, if applicable, turn on the gas supply.

With both sets of accurate measurement, you can now start shopping for the perfect wall oven for your cabinet.
