Cool and Collected Living Room

This room is a great example of how a really smart space plan can make the most of any area in the house, starting with the media wall.
Every square inch in this space is needed because thee’s not a really big footprint. In lieu of a fireplace mantel, doing a floor to ceiling box made with lumber allowed the TV to be reset into the wall. To make it more of a focal point, tile was installed herringbone style from the floor all the way up to the ceiling. When you walk in, your eyes immediately go to the focal point which is the wall rather than directly to the TV.
A floating style furniture plan allows the room to feel bigger. The furniture is arranged to flank the focal point, and the pieces are as big as they can possibly be without overwhelming the space. The arm chairs are pretty deep and are super-comfortable and very traditional in style; the lack of a high back makes the space feel larger because they don’t block your view out the window. The settee-style three-seater sofa is French and very feminine with clean simple light lines instead of having rolled arms or even a full padded back, making it a lot less bulky. Although the coffee table is generously sized, it’s open on the bottom, which creates the illusion of slightly more space.
Roman shades installed one foot higher than the top of the window create a higher line which makes the room seem taller. To create a little bit more of a focal point, mid-century style sputnik lamps flank the fireplace.
An excellent design trick for adding the look and feel of an entry into a living room that doesn’t actually have one is to create a beautiful entryway vignette with a mix of furniture. An appropriately sized console table adds a lot of old age charm to the space, and there is concealed storage for things that could become clutter.
