How to Install Garage Door Insulation

If you have a wooden garage door, use rigid insulation such as foam board. A metal door will accommodate any type of insulation. Garage door insulation kits make installation easier. The kit featured in this video is great because it has a washable white vinyl facing and includes most of the tools you will need for installation. This DIY project takes about an hour to complete. If you’re going to be working with fiberglass, be sure to wear gloves.

1. Make two marks on each door panel, 12 inches from the sides and centered vertically. Peel the release paper from the adhesive tape and firmly press them onto the marks. Next, remove the other side of the release paper and stick a retainer clip to each one.

2. Carefully measure each door panel, keeping in mind that each panel is not necessarily the same size.

3. With a sharp utility knife or scissors, cut each insulation piece one to two inches longer than its measurement on all sides. This will give it a good tight fit.

4. Now that all of the insulation panels are cut to the correct size, tuck the insulation into the door panels with the vinyl side facing out. Once the insulation is pushed into the retainer clips, slice small 1/2-inch holes in the vinyl. This will allow the retainer clips to pass through.

5. To finish up, push the other half of the retainer clips into the door install clips until you get a good snug fit. This will hold the insulation tightly to the door.
