A weekend project is a great way to spruce up an ugly bathroom:

1. Focus on surface updates like a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling, walls and trim. If you have a little more time, consider adding a wall treatment like wainscoting, beaded board or wallpaper to bring in texture, pattern and color.

2. Think about replacing old dated faucets and shower heads and getting a new shower curtain. Changing out the wall sconces will also provide improved lighting.

3. If your existing vanity is in good shape, prime and paint it and replace the hardware to make it look like new.

4. Give your old builder grade mirror a custom look by using cut-to-size frame pieces and installing them using strong double-sided tape. Prime and paint them in a color of your choice, and you have a custom-looking piece for a fraction of the cost.
