For the kitchen island project featured in this video, the size was determined, and the top was constructed first. For your project, you can use hardwood or something a little more rough like fence boards, pallet material or reclaimed wood. The edges were rounded with a Milwaukee router to give it a finished look.

Next, the wine rack was constructed. Before it was finished, the legs and frame were assembled to the island.

Once the frame for the island was built, the screw holes were filled and the frame sanded down to get ready for paint. Several layers of paint and sanding in between coats create a weathered or distressed look, making the island appear it’s been painted before. If you want to keep a natural wood look, you should use a sustainable wood filler. If you’re just painting, you can use drywall compound.

To give the tabletop a distressed look, it was pounded with a hammer, chains, and other tools to make it appear worn.

The last step was the installation of robe hooks and the towel bar.

Hopefully this gives you enough inspiration to build your own kitchen island.
