Tips For Buying a Range Hood

A new range hood allows you to take meal preparation to the professional level while making a distinct style statement. Get tips for buying a range hood in this video by Better Homes and Gardens:

Power level: Consider how much power the fan needs, which is measured in cubic feet per minute or CFM. A professional-style six-burner range needs a hood with higher CFM than a standard 30-inch cooktop. At minimum, calculate 1 CFM per 100 BTUs in the range.

Installation height: Think about placement and size. It’s best to install standard hoods 18-24 inches above the cooking surface. Add a few inches if you have a higher power hood.

Size: The hood should be at least as wide as the range, or best case scenario, three inches wider on each side. Buy the range first, and then the hood.

Style and price: Under-cabinet hoods are the least expensive. Expect to pay more for ceiling- or wall-mounted chimney hoods or custom built-ins.
