How to Install Artificial Grass

Artificial grass has come a long way in recent years. These days, it looks and feels natural. Start by measuring the length of your yard and multiplying that by its width. This calculation determines how much artificial turf you’ll need. You can order artificial grass from your local home improvement store and have it delivered directly to your home.

You’ll need to prep your yard for installation. If you are laying the artificial turf on an existing lawn, remove any old grass and excavate down about four inches. You’ll want to contour the grade so water can drain off and not pool. Add a layer of crushed gravel on top of the soil and tap it down about one inch.

After the site is prepped, you’re ready for the new grass. Roll out the turf and line one edge up with the edge of your yard. Tap landscape spikes into the ground about every foot along the edge to hold the turf in place. If you’re using two pieces of turf together, lay the second piece alongside the first piece in the same direction. Be careful to make the seams line up perfectly. Reinforce the seam with more landscape spikes. Be sure to smooth out any visible wrinkles. Add more landscape spikes to secure the turf into its final position. Use a utility knife to cut off any excess along the edges of your yard.

You want to weight the turf down so that it sets. Use a seed spreader or hopper to spread sand over the new grass. You will need about 1-1/2 to 2 pounds of sand per square foot of grass. The last step is to use a push broom with stiff bristles to work the sand into the fibers of the grass. This will help the grass blades stand up and give your new lawn a completely realistic look.
