Fireplace Makeover with Two Mantel Vignettes
This dated fireplace was an eyesore – it was bulky, badly made and protruded too far into an already narrow room. See the results of this fireplace makeover with two mantel vignettes in this House & Home video:
The design goal was to create a smaller and a more streamlined contemporary fireplace. There was a lot to consider: the size and depth of the mantel, shape and color of the tiles, grout color and the paint color for the mantel.
Everything was replaced except for the existing gas insert. The surround was made from MDF with poplar trim, and the tile was a classic subway shade laid down in a herringbone pattern. Once completed, the renovated fireplace had ample mantel surface, and the homeowner gained about a foot of space.
The simplicity and streamlined style of the fireplace allows taking the decorating in any direction you want:
1. The first look is marked by symmetry and a black and white color scheme provided by artwork and book stacks. Flower vases add pops of color, while flanking chairs complete the look.
2. The second look is loose and collected with decor in a variety of colors, textures, sizes and heights and includes a sculptural piece. A old chair and ladder flank the fireplace. The trick to achieving this look is to have elements of different sizes and to create an overall triangle right in the center.
