How to Select a Chandelier

Chandeliers aren’t just for the dining room anymore. With so many styles available, you can use them in any room to give your home the look of luxury. Learn how to select a chandelier in this Lowe’s video:

Consider size before you buy:

  • A mini-chandelier can bring beauty to the smaller rooms in your house. Hang one in the powder room, master bedroom closet or hallway to add a little sparkle.
  • A medium-sized chandelier makes a great focal point for a kitchen, dining room, living room or bedroom.
  • Large chandeliers work best in a great room or a large foyer with a vaulted ceiling.

A handy formula for deciding on size is to add the length and width in feet of your room – that number in inches is the diameter of the chandelier you need.

The style of the chandelier you choose – casual, formal, vintage – depends on your lifestyle.

When you’re ready to hang your chandelier, make sure the bottom of it is 28 to 32 inches above the table or countertop. If you want to hang it at the bottom of a staircase, make sure it’s at least nine feet above the floor – and make sure it fits. Just remember two things: don’t hang it so low that someone bonks their head on it, and don’t let it block anyone’s view.

Now you can enjoy a beautiful new light in time for your next dinner party!
