Functional Kitchen Design Tips

Kitchen trends may come and go, but thoughtful storage is timeless. Understanding how you will use your kitchen will help you choose the right design elements. This video by The Home Depot presents several functional design tips:

If your new kitchen had a persona type, who would it be – baker, chef, entertainer or kid friendly? Whichever persona your kitchen has, you may want to add a dash of the following:

Baker: Cabinets bases with pull-out drawers provide ready access to baking essentials. Pop-up mixer stands are another hot item showing up in kitchens. Rolling dough is a little easier when the kitchen island is slightly lower than the standard 36″ countertop.

Chef: Cooking instruments and ingredients need to be right at hand. Features like open shelving and hanging pot racks make cooking more enjoyable.

Entertainer: An entertainer’s kitchen should allow for effortless multi-tasking. Extra deep cabinet storage for large party trays and drink stations away from the cooking area allow guests to serve themselves and keep the party flowing.

Kid Friendly: For active families, kitchens should accommodate and enhance their lifestyle. Counter-height seating and cabinet base drawers will give the little ones easy access to their favorite custom dishes as well as comfortable seating at the table. The same goes for hands-free sensor-activated faucets, pull-out garbage bins and a space to do homework.
