Nine Decorating Tips for Small Spaces
Small spaces deserve the biggest and smartest decor. The nine decorating tips presented in this Better Homes and Gardens video give small rooms a real boost:
Incorporating a few of these decorating strategies will give your small rooms a greater sense of spaciousness and more flexibility.
1. Think big. Instead of hanging a lot of small artwork, go for one large statement piece for placement above the sofa or adjacent to a tall hutch.
2. Take advantage of height. Buy curtains large enough to mount at the ceiling. Floor-to-ceiling curtains make a room feel grand.
3. Take collections up high to make the room feel tall.
4. Instead of large arm chairs, go with smaller chairs that take up less floor space, such as dining chairs.
5. Skip the bulky coffee table and opt for a pair of storage ottomans. They can be moved around where needed, and the tops can be flipped over to provide a hard surface for drinks. They can also be used to store games, remotes and throws.
6. Maximize your dining space by choosing armless chairs with high backs for impact. Go a step further and swap out the front pair for a dining bench. You can seat a third person, and the bench can be stored under the table when not in use, leaving the walkway clear.
7. Skip the rugs and leave floors looking like a wide open plain instead.
8. Don’t underestimate the power of a pendant light fixture. Choose one with a shape that stands out and a finish that adds sparkle.
9. Think you don’t have room for a home office? A few shelves inside a cabinet base could be all the space you need to turn a dining table into a work area.
